The book of Hebrews introduces us to profound theological truths that can transform our understanding of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. Today we explore one of the deepest concepts in Scripture - Jesus as our great high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Why Do We Need a Mediator?
Most of us understand the concept of needing help, but the idea of a mediator might be less familiar. A mediator is someone who steps between two parties to help resolve differences and find common ground.
Sin created a separation between us and God - a problem we could never fix ourselves. We are broken, hurting, and condemned. "'The wages of sin is death'" - Romans 6:23. Under the Old Covenant, God established a priestly system where earthly priests stood between God and the people as mediators.
The Limitations of Earthly Priests
Under the Old Testament system, priests had specific requirements and limitations:
- They were chosen from among men
- They were appointed to act on behalf of people
- They offered sacrifices for sins
- They could deal gently with people because they understood human weakness
However, every earthly priest had a critical problem - they were sinners themselves. They had to offer sacrifices for their own sins as well as for the people they represented.
Understanding the Tribal System
To grasp why Jesus' priesthood is revolutionary, we need to understand the Jewish tribal system. Of the twelve tribes of Israel, two had specific roles:
The Tribe of Levi
All priests had to come from the tribe of Levi. Not every Levite was a priest, but every priest was a Levite. This was God's established order.
The Tribe of Judah
Kings came from the lineage of Judah. Jesus came from this royal line, making Him "the lion of the tribe of Judah."
These two offices - priest and king - were kept completely separate. You were either a king or a priest, never both.
Jesus Breaks the Mold
Here's where Jesus revolutionizes everything: He fulfills both roles. He is not only the King of Kings but also our eternal priest. This priesthood is different because it doesn't follow the Levitical system - it follows the order of Melchizedek.
Who Was Melchizedek?
Melchizedek appears in Genesis 14 as both king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. What makes him significant:
- No genealogy is given - we don't know his beginning or end
- He was both king and priest (breaking the traditional separation)
- He blessed Abraham, the father of all believers
- He appeared before the Levitical priesthood was ever established
This lack of recorded genealogy becomes symbolic in Hebrews, pointing to a priesthood that doesn't depend on ancestry but on divine appointment.
Why Jesus' Priesthood is Superior
Jesus' priesthood surpasses the earthly system in several ways:
He Has Final Authority
Unlike earthly systems where you might need to speak to multiple managers to resolve an issue, Jesus has the final say. There's no escalation path needed and no replacement coming.
He Understands Our Suffering
"'In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears'" - Hebrews 5:7. Jesus experienced human suffering and learned obedience through what He suffered, yet remained without sin.
He Provides Eternal Salvation
Jesus didn't merely make salvation possible - He became the source of eternal salvation. Unlike the temporary, repeated sacrifices of the old system, Jesus' sacrifice was once and for all.
What This Means for Your Relationship with God
This truth reveals that our God is both holy and compassionate. He demands atonement for sin (holiness) but provided the perfect mediator (compassion). Jesus understands our weaknesses without compromising His holiness.
You are fully known by God - He knows everything about your heart, motivations, failures, and successes. Yet He still invites you near to the throne of grace without conditions because He made a way through Jesus.
Your Access Has Been Secured
Your confidence with God rests on Jesus, not your performance. In the old system, even if invited by the high priest, you couldn't enter the Holy of Holies. But Jesus was both the sacrifice and the priest who tore the temple veil in two, inviting you to come in.
Now you can walk boldly to the throne of grace. Your access is because of Jesus, not because of what you've done - because you could never earn it.
Life Application
Act upon the access Jesus has given you. Go boldly to God this week and pray with complete honesty. You don't need to hide anything - He already knows and understands. Confess your sins quickly, worship Him confidently, and stop hiding in shame.
You are not an unwanted outsider approaching God. You come through Jesus as a child of the King. The hands that were pierced for you are now pleading for you before the Father.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I trying to earn what Jesus has already secured for me?
- Do I approach God with confidence or shame?
- How can I better utilize the access Jesus has given me this week?
Stop trying to perform your way to God's acceptance. Jesus has already done everything necessary. Come boldly through Him and experience the freedom that comes from having a great high priest who truly understands you.
