Why Colossians was written:
The church at Colossae was under attack from false teachers who were insulting the deity of Jesus; they were teaching that He was not actually God. Paul addressed these issues head-on.

Today we look at the closing of the book of Colossians. Chapter 4 reminds us that it takes all of us and we must finish strong!
The Sent (4:7-9)
Tychicus was sent to report on Paul’s wellbeing and to encourage the church.
Onesimus was sent to accompany Tychicus, restore relationships, and tell of all that has happened in Rome.
The Supporters and Prayer Warriors (4:10-14)
Paul provides encouragement in his roll call of supporters and prayer warriors.
These are fellow soldiers for Christ who are praying for the church and working on their behalf.
The Co-laborers (4:15-16)
Sharing the good news, God’s Word, and encouragement in the work of the Lord.
We should partner with other churches and believers to accomplish our mission of reaching the world.
The Final Charge (4:17)
Ultimately, we do not know much about Archippus other than he was a Christian in the early church who was granted a ministry from the Lord and who soldiered for the faith.

Paul’s encouragement to Archippus and his family should encourage all of us to also “complete the ministry” God has given us.
How do I apply this?
This week we start our application with the Power text:

Power Text: (4:2-6)
2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

These versus are very practical in their direction:

Continue steadfastly in prayer - being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
Steadfastly: Persistent, consistent, unwavering, constant

Pray for your pastor - that God may open to a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. (Outreach)

Let your speech always be gracious (compassionate & kind), seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Final thoughts:

The Sent (4:7-8)
· We have been sent for a Purpose.

The Supporters and Prayer Warriors (4:9-14)
· Remind us that we are not alone.
· While you may not be able to be there in person, don’t discount the power of your prayers and encouragement.

The Co-laborers (4:15-16)
· Work together. We are stronger together than we could ever be alone.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The Final Charge (4:17)
· See to it… be intentional, be accountable, be resilient, be resolved.
· Keep on keeping on.
· Work to completion. Finish strong.
