What is the greatest blessing of being saved? Most people would say forgiveness, eternal life, or peace. And while all of those are real and worth celebrating, there is something even deeper at the heart of salvation that often gets overlooked. It is the restored ability to draw near to God Himself.
Hebrews chapter 7 is one of the most theologically rich passages in the entire New Testament. It was written to new believers from a Jewish background who were being tempted to return to the old religious system. The writer of Hebrews makes a bold and clear argument: Jesus is better. Better than the angels, better than Moses, better than Abraham, and better than the entire Levitical priesthood.
The old law had a purpose, but it was never designed to bring completion. Like an X-ray that can show a broken bone but cannot heal it, the law could reveal sin but could not fix it. That is where Jesus comes in.
Jesus did not qualify as a priest under the old system because He came from the tribe of Judah, not Levi. But He became our High Priest not through bloodline or legal requirement, but through the power of an indestructible life. He fulfilled the ancient prophecy of Psalm 110:4, serving as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, a mysterious figure from Genesis 14 who was both king and priest, whose name meant King of Righteousness and whose title meant King of Peace.
When Jesus cried out from the cross, He used the word Tetelestai, meaning it is finished, it is completed. The law could only describe what was needed. Jesus stepped in and did it. He finished the work that nothing and no one else could.
Hebrews 7:19 introduces what it calls a better hope, and the defining characteristic of that hope is the ability to draw near to God. From the Garden of Eden, where God walked and called out to His people, to the cross, where the barrier between humanity and the Father was removed, God has always been pursuing relationship with us. The cross did not just erase guilt. It opened the door to full fellowship with the Father.
Topics covered include the book of Hebrews, the Levitical priesthood, Melchizedek in the Bible, the meaning of Tetelestai, the better hope in Hebrews 7, drawing near to God, the purpose of the Old Testament law, Jesus as High Priest, the prodigal son and God's love, and the greatest blessing of salvation.
Whether you are exploring Christianity for the first time, growing in your faith, or looking for a deeper understanding of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, this message speaks directly to the heart of the gospel. The law showed us the problem. Jesus solved it. And the greatest result of that solution is not just a clean record. It is a restored relationship with the God who has been pursuing you all along.
