Hebrews 7:1-10; Genesis 14

Melchizedek appears in Genesis 14 for just a few verses, with no introduction, no genealogy, and no recorded death. Most readers pass right over him. But the writer of Hebrews devotes an entire chapter to unpacking why this mysterious figure matters deeply for every believer. His name means King of Righteousness and his title, King of Salem, means King of Peace. Those two descriptions are not coincidental. They are foreshadowing. Righteousness comes first, then peace, because true peace is never found apart from the righteousness that comes through Christ. The silence surrounding Melchizedek in scripture is intentional. There is no birth record, no death record, and no family tree. For the writer of Hebrews, that silence mirrors something eternally true about Jesus, who exists outside of time, had no beginning, and has no end. When Abraham, the greatest patriarch in Israel's history, willingly gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had won in battle, he was acknowledging a higher authority before any law required it. That act of giving was an act of faith, a bowing before someone greater than himself. The writer of Hebrews builds on this to make a sweeping argument: Jesus is greater than the angels, greater than Moses, greater than Abraham, and greater even than Melchizedek. Melchizedek is not a destination. He is a signpost. He is a type, a foreshadowing of the One who was always the plan. God has been orchestrating the story of redemption since the very beginning, and nothing about Jesus arriving on the scene was accidental. From Genesis 14 to Hebrews 7, every mysterious figure, every promise, and every detail of scripture was part of a tapestry being woven long before any of us could see the full design. When life feels uncertain and it is hard to see what God is doing, remember that we may simply be in the middle of the story. He has always been there, and He always will be.

If you want to go deeper, read Genesis 14 and Hebrews 7 back to back and ask yourself: how does Melchizedek point to Jesus? Then carry that habit into the rest of your Bible reading. Every time you open scripture, ask how it points you to Christ.
