We live in a world that is overwhelmingly loud. Everyone has an opinion, a thought, or something to say. Turn on the news and you'll find no shortage of commentary. Open social media and you'll be flooded with perspectives. Even our inner voice constantly speaks to us, telling us we're not enough or making us second-guess our choices.
When everything is speaking, who has the final word?
The book of Hebrews opens with a powerful statement: "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son."
This tells us something crucial - God is not silent. He's not distant or disinterested. Throughout history, God has spoken in many ways to many people about many things. He spoke through prophets, through history, and through scripture.
Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were under intense pressure. They were tempted to drift back to their old ways - the familiar temple worship, sacrifices, and priesthood they had grown up with. Following Jesus had cost them something. Many faced family opposition, religious persecution, and even had property seized because of their faith.
They weren't tempted to stop believing in God, but to return to what felt safe and familiar. However, what they were considering returning to was only a shadow - Jesus is the reality.
The central message of Hebrews is simple: Jesus is better. He's better than the prophets, better than angels, better than Moses, better than the priesthood, and better than the old sacrificial system.
When life pressures you to turn back to old patterns or familiar but inadequate solutions, remember - Jesus is better.
Scripture gives us seven incredible descriptions of who Jesus is:
1. He is the heir of all things - God appointed Jesus to inherit everything.
2. He is the Creator of the world - All things were made through Him.
3. He is the radiance of God's glory - Jesus shines with God's glory, brighter than the sun.
4. He is the exact imprint of God's nature - To see Jesus is to see God's character perfectly expressed.
5. He upholds the universe by His word - His power sustains galaxies, planets, stars, and even the breath in your body.
6. He made purification for sins - This is the gospel in action.
7. He sat down at the right hand of God - This signifies completed work.
In the Old Testament temple, you would find altars, basins, candlesticks, and boxes for showbread - but no chairs. Priests never sat down because their work was never finished. They sacrificed morning and evening, day after day, because sin never ends and their sacrifices could only cover sin, not remove it.
When Jesus "sat down," it signified what He declared on the cross: "It is finished" (tetelestai in Greek). This wasn't about the end of His life, but the completion of redemption for all mankind, past and future.
The Old Testament sacrificial system could only cover sin, like when God made clothes from animal skins to cover Adam and Eve's nakedness. But Jesus didn't just cover your sin - He purified it. Your sin wasn't just dealt with; it was cleansed completely.
The work was so complete that Jesus could sit down. He didn't start salvation - He finished it.
If God has spoken finally through His Son, what are you doing with His voice? You cannot hear the final word and simply nod politely. You either listen or drift. You either trust or substitute. You either bow or harden your heart.
We must submit our beliefs, decisions, relationships, and priorities to His authority. We don't just consult God's Word - we submit to it.
A common misconception is thinking you need to get your life together before coming to Jesus. This is backwards thinking. You cannot clean yourself up - that's exactly why Jesus came. He didn't come to improve you or inspire you; He came to save you.
The work is already finished. The sacrifice has been accepted, the debt paid, the way opened. You come to Him as you are because He's already done everything necessary.
This week, when you face pressure to return to old patterns, familiar but inadequate solutions, or when the world's loud voices try to drown out truth, remember that Jesus is better. He is the final word, the completed work, the perfect sacrifice.
Stop negotiating with God about your surrender. Stop delaying your decision to fully trust Him. Jesus is not an option among many - He is the heir of all things, Creator of all things, sustainer of all things, and purifier of our sins.
